Yolanda: Understanding where water comes from helps me think about how we use water and how we think about water. // Maj: “Souls.” We are just ripples, overlapping and pouring into one another. “Waterways.” Our lives cross, our cells divide. Life is miraculous. // Meredith: “Make the invisible visible.” This illustration highlights the importance of studying changes in groundwater storage and is inspired by NASA’s GRACE project. // Amanda: The impact water has on our lives can go overlooked, especially in times of divide. This is a reflective piece focused on the dynamics of the arts as it relates to our planet’s health.
We at the Design Collectives student organization of USFCA were lucky enough to coordinate a lecture by Dr. AJ Purdy, PhD about the significant of groundwater in Earth’s water sources, its exploitation over the past century, and the methods utilized by scientists to measure groundwater reduction over time (using satellites! How cool is that?!). We combined this scientific learning with our personal experiences with water to analyze its presence in our lives and express this artistically. Groundwater goes unseen, but approximately 30 percent of all readily available freshwater in the world is groundwater, and it is often exploited. Make the invisible visible!
