Beaux St. LaFontaine
My mail art features a short, fun poem urging readers to learn how to recycle properly. Next to this poem, you can see a collection of creepy but cute specimens that serve as a warning about what humans will become if our water supply is permanently tainted.
I have been so fortunate that I have had access to clean water all of my life. However, I have always been aware that this is a privilege that many people do not possess. My identity as a white, middle-class citizen aids in my occasional forgetfulness that communities close to me still struggle with affordable, clean water. This project reminded me of that fact, and it was interesting to look at what my state has done to protect and clean its water in recent years. Seeing what my community and legislators have done with the Clean Water for Delaware Act has given me hope for the youth in my state to grow up healthier and happier. I did not want to be depressing with my message as climate nihilism helps no one. I came up with the short poem after playing with my friend’s stamp collection and finding a set of creepy yet cute specimens. Humor is a great tool for reaching out to the younger generation, so I kept my message light but straight to the point. Every image on the card was made with silicone stamps and ink, and anything extra was attached with double-sided tape.
