For me, water is a constant source of inspiration and awe. This painting was inspired by the time I spent working for the Forest Service in Michigan, mapping stream networks within the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Through spending dozens of hours trekking through lush green forests in search of the source (beginning) and sink (ending) of each stream segment, I developed a deeper appreciation for how wonderfully complex streams can be – dipping above and below ground unexpectedly, as a result of nuanced and localized changes in the geology and hydrologic properties of the immediate area. For me, this experience sparked a deeper sense of awe in the beautiful complexity of surface water-groundwater interactions, and the fact that at any given moment, for every thing I can see or understand about water in a specific area, there are a million other things left to learn and discover.
