A Gathering of the IA community and an invitation to reimagine the ways we shape and are shaped by water.
Complementing the forthcoming issue of its multi-media journal Public, IA’s 2021 National Gathering, The Shape of Us: Water Ways and Movements, focuses on a subject of pressing concern across multiple political, economic, social, and environmental struggles for justice and equity: water. With global warming and rising water levels destroying livelihoods, exposing failures in governmental policies and public services, and drastically reconfiguring relationships to space, place, community, and identity, this year’s gathering invites a critical reflection on the ways we shape and are shaped by our relationship to water, and explores water as a guide to movement organizing and liberation work.
Held virtually this October 21-22, the 2021 National Gathering will feature artists, scholars, organizers, and other local and national leaders who are reimagining and redesigning our water systems and thinking deeply about water-based ways of learning, working, organizing, and living. The two-day program will further showcase the work of IA members and research collectives committed to strengthening publicly-engaged knowledge and creative practices. Through plenary conversations and performances, participatory workshops, and other connective opportunities, participants will network, dialogue, learn, and strategize around ways to build new knowledge and inspire collective imagination towards transformative education and action.
We also invite you to save the dates for IA’s 2022 National Gathering in New Orleans, LA (in-person – hopefully!) After consultation with our local partners, we are excited to move forward with an in-person convening in this magical city, which will take place October 14-16, 2022. Building on a now several-year collaboration, the 2021 and the 2022 National Gathering are organized in partnership with the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, Tulane University, and members of the 2020-22 National Gathering New Orleans Steering Committee.
