A Meditation on Moving

(Breathing in I calm myself. Breathing out I let go.)

Trina Van Schyndel

Inspired by recent meditation and mindfulness sessions offered at UC Davis, I wove together phrases from those sessions, personal reflections, and personal photographs to document my experience moving across the country and starting a new job in the midst of a global pandemic. For me, meditation and mindfulness practice have been key to processing the trauma of the past year. I am grateful UC Davis offers these sessions for staff, which promote care and kindness toward oneself and toward others.

My former street in Milwaukee – empty when it should have been bustling.

I left behind empty streets and so much rage and heartache. I left without really saying goodbye to those who mattered so much these past few years. My lingering sadness and pain carried me across the country to my new job, my new home.

(May my body and mind be strong.)

Taking a break with my pup while crossing the Emigrant Gap into California.

I arrived ragged yet hopeful. I struggled and fought for balance in the midst of so much uncertainty. Though disconnected, I found I was not alone. I reached out through the exhaustion and grief toward healing spaces, places, and people.

(May the difficulties in my life be met with kindness and care.)

My new home in Davis – tinged with wildfire smoke.

I am still reaching as I continue to move through the grieving process. Searching for the shining sun through the smoke and haze. Hopeful for new connections and new community. A new horizon presents the possibilities.

(May I live with ease.)

(Breathing in I calm myself. Breathing out I let go.)
