Against a green background is a collage. In the middle is a square composed of four triangles: two yellow on the top and bottom, and two featuring Japanese style waves on the left and right. A pink string weaves over the image. It is surrounded by red beads which have a golden heart at the center. The string leads to a circle of pink (made with a pipecleaner) which has a white bead at its center with a red heart on it. On the top quadrant are the following words, made with beads: You got this.

Using the provided materials, I created a piece of art that embodies moments of reflection while looking forward with a sense of possibility. Rather than dwelling on the traumas experienced by our tribal members, I chose to honor our origins by paying tribute to those who came before us. This reflection is guided in love, both given and received, with an overarching message that boldly declares, “You got this.”

One major reckoning is that I don’t have to run from my past as a Native American, athlete, or coach. For many years, I avoided identifying with the labels others placed on me. I was told that, as a Native American and an athlete, a graduate education was beyond my reach. Now, approaching my mid-50s as a non-traditional graduate student, the reckoning is that I don’t have to conform to those low expectations. I’ve realized that I am capable of much more than what was expected of me.

Incorporating the elements of fire, water, earth, and air into my life has profoundly influenced my journey. Fire inspires collaboration, igniting passion and driving collective efforts. Water teaches adaptability and flow, encouraging me to embrace new lessons and approaches. Earth provides stability and grounding, reminding me of the importance of staying true to myself. Air represents the spirit of reflection, offering clarity and insight.

This process of reckoning is both reflective and active. It involves looking back to understand my past while actively engaging with my present and future. As an adult, I have embraced these elemental principles, fostering a spirit of collaboration and reflection as I move forward on my journey.

Like springtime’s blossoming, we surge forward on our path of self-discovery and empowerment. Along the way, we pause to celebrate the joy of creation and mother earth, a legacy built by those who came before us. Their love and sacrifice paved the way, a path we walk with gratitude. We honor their efforts, remembering their belief in us: “You got this.”
